Trying to Conceive

You and your partner have discussed it and made the decision: you want to start having children. An exciting first step to take! But once you’ve made the decision, you often want to get pregnant as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always happen that quickly. In some cases, it might even take up to a year before you become pregnant.

Each month, you have approximately a 20% chance of getting pregnant. Are you 35 years or older? Then the chance is 10%. That may sound low, but don’t worry! Here are several things that can increase your chances of having a healthy pregnancy:

    • Start taking folic acid and vitamin D;
    • Eat a healthy and varied diet;
    • Exercise regularly;
    • Stop smoking, alcohol, and drug use.

Do you have an underlying condition or are you taking medication? Then it’s best to contact us or your general practitioner. We offer expert advice that can increase your chances of becoming pregnant. More information about a healthy pregnancy can be found on Planning for Pregnancy or Getting Pregnant.

Sometimes it doesn’t work

If after a year of trying you haven’t been able to get pregnant, you may choose to have tests done. For this, you first go to your general practitioner. The general practitioner can assess whether a referral to a gynecologist is necessary and if you qualify for fertility treatments. Read more about this on Freya.
