First Appointment with the Midwife in the Hague – What Can You Expect?
The first appointment with the midwife is a special moment. It marks the beginning of a period full of anticipation, questions, and new feelings. Perhaps you have just discovered that you are pregnant, or you are still a bit unsure. Whatever you are experiencing — at Verloskundigenpraktijk Margriet in The Hague, we are ready to guide you with calm and confidence from the very beginning.
When should You Schedule your First Appointment with the Midwife?
As soon as you know or suspect that you are pregnant, you can contact us immediately. The sooner we get to know you, the better we can support you. We usually schedule the first appointment between 7 and 9 weeks of pregnancy.
Many women wonder:
“Do I need to see the GP first?”
No, that’s not necessary. In the Netherlands, you can directly call a midwifery practice or register online. We take care of the rest, midwifery care is covered by the basic insurance.
Do you live in The Hague, Voorburg, Rijswijk, or the Westland? Then you are more than welcome with us.
What Happens During the First Appointment?
The first appointment with the midwife usually lasts about an hour. We really take the time for you.
We discuss:
• how you are doing and how your pregnancy is progressing so far;
• your medical history and any previous pregnancies;
• your lifestyle, diet, and work conditions;
• any wishes or concerns you have;
• which tests and ultrasounds are possible in the first trimester;
• practical matters, such as maternity care and applying for leave.
During this appointment, we also schedule the dating ultrasound, usually around 10 weeks. This ultrasound shows exactly how far along you are and how your baby’s heart is beating.
The First Ultrasound – the Moment it Becomes Real
The first ultrasound is a milestone for many parents. For the first time, you see your baby on the screen. A small beating heart, a moment you will never forget.
The ultrasound takes place in our own practice at Weimarstraat 20 in The Hague. Your partner or someone else important to you is, of course, welcome to join.
We use modern ultrasound equipment and take the time to explain everything calmly. You will receive the images to take home, so you can view them again later.
What Do You Bring to your First Appointment?
To ensure the conversation goes smoothly, it is helpful if you bring the following:
• your ID;
• your health insurance card (useful for your BSN number);
• details of your GP and pharmacy;
• the date of your last menstruation (if you know it);
• a list of any medications you are taking;
• and all your questions or doubts — feel free to write them down in advance.
Many women ask questions like:
“Can I still exercise during pregnancy?”
“What can I eat or not eat?”
“When will I hear my baby’s heartbeat?”
All these topics are covered during your first visit. But you can already read through our website where many of these questions are answered. You can always reach us if you have an urgent question (even via WhatsApp)!

Ultrasounds and Tests – What Can You Expect?
During your pregnancy, you will have several ultrasounds and can choose from some tests.
• Dating ultrasound (10 weeks) – to see how far along you are.
• 13-week ultrasound – early screening for physical abnormalities.
• 20-week ultrasound – comprehensive growth measurement of your baby.
• Extra ultrasounds – if you wish, for example, to know the gender or for reassurance.
For the 13- and 20-week ultrasounds, we collaborate with our colleagues from Verloskundige Praktijk Rijswijk. This ensures you receive the best care and modern equipment.
