Pregnant in the summer? How to take care of yourself during hot days ☀️
Tips from your midwife in The Hague
Pregnancy is a special time – full of expectations, changes, and emotions. But when your pregnancy coincides with hot summer days, it can feel a bit more challenging. Your body is busy growing new life and responds differently to heat than usual.
At Verloskundigenpraktijk Margriet in The Hague we hear many questions during summer from women looking for rest, cooling down, and practical tips. That’s why we’re sharing our five favorite summer tips here – tailored to your pregnant body.
💧 1. Stay well hydrated
During pregnancy, you need more fluids. Especially in higher temperatures, it’s important to drink
Tip: Add a slice of lemon, mint, or cucumber for a refreshing taste.
🌿 2. Avoid direct sunlight
Your body is already working hard. Try to avoid the sun in the afternoon – between 12:00 and 16:00 – and plan outings in the morning or evening. Stay in the shade or inside in a well-ventilated space.
Wear light, cotton clothing and don’t forget your sun hat!
🧘♀️ 3. Give yourself rest
Many pregnant women feel tired more quickly in summer. This is normal. Take breaks, have an afternoon nap, or read a book in the garden. Rest isn’t a luxury – it’s part of taking good care of yourself and your baby.
What your body needs now is gentleness and attention.
🥗 4. Eat light, nutritious and cool foods
Heavy meals can make you feel sluggish. Instead, choose light dishes like salads, whole grain products, cold soups, and fresh fruit. Watermelon, berries, or yogurt are not only healthy but also help maintain your fluid balance.
🤍 5. Stay connected – with yourself and with us
