✈️ Traveling During your Pregnancy? Here’s how to Do it Safely and Relaxed🌴
Being pregnant does not mean you have to stay home. In fact, a pleasant holiday or short trip can help you catch your breath before your baby arrives. Whether you choose a sunny beach, a cozy city trip, or simply some
quality time in your own country – traveling during your pregnancy is perfectly possible, as long as you are well-prepared.
At Midwifery Practice Margriet in The Hague, we are happy to provide you with practical tips so that you can enjoy your trip safely and relaxed.
📅 when is the Best Time to Travel During your Pregnancy?
Most women feel their fittest during the second trimester (between weeks 14 and 28). The nausea of the first trimester has usually disappeared, and your belly is not yet as cumbersome as it will be later in pregnancy. This is often the ideal period for travel.
👉 Tip: consider not traveling after 36 weeks of pregnancy. Airlines and insurance companies may impose additional conditions.
✈️ Traveling by Plane: What You Need to Know
Traveling by plane is generally safe if your pregnancy is progressing well.
Please note:
- Check the airline’s rules. Sometimes a pregnancy certificate from your midwife is required from 28 weeks onwards.
- Keep moving well during the flight – walk through the aisle and rotate your ankles to prevent thrombosis.
- Drink enough water – the air in planes is dry, and you need extra fluids when pregnant.
🚗 Traveling by Car or Train
Traveling by car or train is also perfectly feasible, but:
- Plan enough stops – get out and move around at least every two hours
- Wear your seatbelt correctly: under your belly, tight over your hips
- Bring pillows – for your lower back or to sit more comfortably
🌡️ What to Pack?
You don’t need to bring your entire house, but you will want to pack this:
- Your pregnancy card or a medical passport
- Comfortable clothing and layers
- Healthy snacks (nuts, fruit, crackers)
- A refillable water bottle
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
- Your first-aid kit with paracetamol, ORS, etc.
💬 Listen to your Body
Perhaps the most important tip: take your limits seriously. Do you feel dizzy, tired, or uncomfortable? Rest, seek shade, or reschedule your plans. Being pregnant is not a limitation, but it does require some extra care.
