Baby nutrition

The choice between breastfeeding and bottle feeding is up to you as parents. Research has shown that breastfeeding is the best nutrition for a newborn, but that doesn’t mean bottle feeding has poor nutritions. The most important thing is that you have a way of feeding on the basis of the right information. This should be a choice where you feel comfortable with.

Breast milk is the best food for a baby because it contains antibodies that stimulate your baby’s immune system, protecting against infection. Children who are breastfed will less likely suffer from allergies and they usually have a higher resistance. In addition, breastfeeding will adapt to the development of your baby. The resulting composition of breast milk will grow with the needs of the baby.
Both you and the baby should learn how to breastfeed. It’s a natural thing, but is not automatic. We and maternity care will therefore help in the building up and give you lots of information and tips.

Baby Formula

For a newborn infant you should always use formula number 1. Number 2 and 3 are for older children and not suitable for a newborn baby’s. Many brands of formula milk are for sale, they differ in price and additives. There is no brand that we recommend, all the formulas supplied in the Netherlands require to the standard requirements. Do not change too often from brand because babies can suffer from it sometimes.
Always use the proportions indicated on the package. Never dilute the food with extra water unless it is recommended by us or the clinic!
There are many types of bottles. It differs quite a bit on the baby which bottle is best. A hungry or rapid drinking baby will need another bottle and teat than a slow drinker. So it’s advisable not to buy immediately many bottles at a time until you know which bottle teat combination pleases the baby. Buy for the first week, two different bottles and teats and find out which is best for your baby. Remember: always buy a teat for a newborn for the first weeks!
